How to Hand Off AI-Generated Shots to an Editor

A folder of attractive AI-generated clips is not an editorial handoff.

An editor needs to know what each shot is for, which version is approved, what it must match, where it belongs in the story, and what to do if it fails in the cut. Without that context, editing starts with detective work: opening dozens of similar files, comparing chat messages, reconstructing scene order, and guessing whether final_v7_new.mp4 is actually final.

A good handoff turns generated media into production assets. It gives the editor enough information to make creative decisions without losing the intent, continuity, and approval history behind each shot.

The simplest quality test is this:

Can an editor who did not generate the footage identify a shot’s purpose, approved version, continuity requirements, and replacement path in under one minute?

If not, the shot is not ready for editorial.

What an AI editorial handoff must contain

A production-ready package has five connected parts:

  1. Approved story context: the current script, scene order, storyboard, and animatic.
  2. Organized media: originals, selected takes, alternates, proxies, audio, graphics, and references.
  3. A shot manifest: one authoritative record connecting every file to its scene, Shot ID, version, purpose, and status.
  4. Continuity and approval notes: what the shot must match, who approved it, and under what scope.
  5. A replacement path: enough context to request and evaluate a new version without starting over.

This does not require an elaborate production database. A small project can use a well-structured folder and spreadsheet. A larger production may use a connected production platform. The principle is the same: filenames, media, notes, and approvals must refer to the same stable shots.

Start with stable Shot IDs

Generated filenames identify outputs, not story units. A file called gen_849203.mp4 may be the fifth attempt at Scene 7, Shot 12—but the editor cannot infer that.

Assign the planned shot a stable ID before generation:

For example:

Then identify each generated asset beneath that shot:

The stable portion—S07_SH012—survives every regeneration, upscale, extension, replacement, and editorial revision. Take and version numbers identify the specific asset.

Use statuses in metadata or the manifest rather than relying only on filenames, because statuses change. If status must appear in the filename, treat it as the name of the editorial copy rather than the immutable source file.

Use one status vocabulary

Teams often use “selected,” “approved,” and “final” as if they mean the same thing. They do not.

Approval must also have a scope. “Approved by the director for an internal rough cut” is different from “approved by the client for final delivery.”

Build the shot manifest

The manifest is the bridge between production intent and editorial media. Use one row per asset version—not merely one row per planned shot.

Recommended fields include:

That row tells the editor much more than “use version five.”

Deliver a folder the editor can navigate

Organize media around production state and story structure rather than generation provider.

A practical top-level package is:

Within approved media, use scene and Shot ID folders. Do not create the primary hierarchy around model names such as Veo, Kling, or Runway. The editor thinks in story order and coverage, not in generation history.

Keep rejected or reference-only files out of the approved folders. They can remain accessible without being one mistaken drag-and-drop away from the client cut.

Preserve source, proxy, and finishing relationships

AI footage may pass through several technical stages:

  • original generation;
  • trimmed or cleaned source;
  • interpolation or frame-rate conversion;
  • upscale;
  • composited version;
  • editorial proxy; and
  • finishing render.

The handoff must state which file is which.

A proxy should link unambiguously to its high-quality source. An upscale should not silently replace the original generation. A temporary composite should remain visibly temporary. If a shot has been altered outside the NLE, record what changed and which prior asset it derives from.

This becomes critical at conform. If the timeline contains S07_SH012_V05_PROXY.mp4, the finishing team must be able to locate the corresponding approved full-resolution source without guessing.

Tell the editor where the usable frames are

Generated clips often contain a strong central moment surrounded by unstable beginnings or endings. The nominal duration is therefore less important than the usable duration.

For every selected shot, note:

  • first clean frame;
  • last clean frame;
  • intended action point;
  • unstable or prohibited ranges;
  • whether optical flow or retiming is acceptable;
  • whether generated audio should be discarded; and
  • whether additional handles exist.

If a five-second clip contains only 1.5 seconds of safe material, call it a 1.5-second editorial asset. Otherwise, the cut may become dependent on frames that cannot survive full-resolution review.

When possible, generate coverage with handles. Ask for the subject to settle before the action and hold after it. A shot that barely contains the key event gives the editor no control over rhythm.

Include story purpose, not just visual description

“Woman turns toward door” describes an image. It does not explain the edit.

A useful note says:

Reaction after Mara realizes the alarm is silent. Hold long enough to register suspicion before cutting to the door insert.

This tells the editor what emotional or narrative work the shot must perform. It also helps the generation team produce a replacement that solves the same problem.

Coverage roles should be explicit:

  • establishing shot;
  • master;
  • medium coverage;
  • close-up;
  • reaction;
  • insert;
  • cutaway;
  • transition;
  • effects plate;
  • environment plate;
  • temporary bridge; or
  • final story beat.

More generated footage does not automatically create more coverage. Twenty versions of the same close-up still leave the editor without a master, reaction, insert, or transition.

Write continuity notes at the shot boundaries

Continuity is most useful when it explains what a shot inherits and what it hands to the next shot.

Record the state at the head and tail:

  • character position and screen direction;
  • eyeline;
  • expression and performance state;
  • wardrobe, hair, makeup, and accessories;
  • props and which hand holds them;
  • location condition and object placement;
  • time of day, weather, and lighting direction;
  • camera height, framing, lens character, and movement;
  • action already completed;
  • action that must continue; and
  • any element intentionally hidden or revealed.

For product shots, include model, colour, material, orientation, logo treatment, controls, and approved geometry. For animation, include character scale, rig or design version, pose, and world rules.

A reference image helps, but it is not a complete continuity instruction. The note should identify which details in the reference are binding.

Attach review notes to exact versions

A comment such as “the earlier one was better” creates ambiguity. Every note should identify:

  • Shot ID;
  • take and version;
  • affected frame or time range;
  • problem type;
  • requested change;
  • owner;
  • priority; and
  • final decision-maker.

For example:

S07_SH012_T03_V05, frames 72–96: eyeline drifts toward camera. Regenerate or trim before the drift; preserve coat, flashlight hand, dusk lighting, and reaction timing. Owner: AI operator. Approval: director.

Keep raw discussion if it is useful for history, but consolidate the decision into one authoritative record. The editor should not have to reconcile contradictory email, chat, and review-platform messages.

Make replacements travel through the same shot

When a shot fails in the cut, reopen the existing Shot ID rather than creating an unrelated asset.

A controlled replacement path is:

  1. Attach the problem to the current shot and version.
  2. State why the existing asset fails in sequence.
  3. Provide the storyboard, selected source, adjacent shots, and binding references.
  4. Preserve the relevant continuity and timing requirements.
  5. Generate or create a new take/version beneath the same Shot ID.
  6. Review it against the surrounding cut.
  7. Apply a scoped approval.
  8. Mark the previous version as superseded.
  9. Replace the timeline asset and record which version is now in use.

This preserves intent. It also prevents a correction to one detail from reintroducing a problem that was solved three versions earlier.

Give the editor an audio plan

AI-generated visual handoffs often arrive with little thought given to sound. Yet audio determines pacing, continuity, and whether disconnected images feel like one scene.

Include:

  • current dialogue or narration;
  • transcript and script version;
  • temp and approved voice-over;
  • pronunciation notes;
  • music status and licensing information;
  • intended ambience;
  • required sound effects;
  • sync points;
  • transitions or cues tied to picture; and
  • whether audio embedded in generated clips is usable, reference-only, or prohibited.

The editor needs to know whether picture should follow an approved voice track, whether the narration is still changing, and which moments must land on music or effects.

Hand off in stages

Do not wait until every generated shot is “finished” before involving editorial.

Assembly handoff

Provide the current script, boards, animatic, approved early shots, proxies, and obvious temporary gaps. The goal is to test structure and coverage.

Rough-cut handoff

Add editorial selects, deliberate alternates, current narration, continuity notes, and replacement priorities. The goal is to expose pacing and sequence problems while changes are still affordable.

Approval handoff

Provide the exact versions intended for client or stakeholder review, with approval scope and unresolved risks clearly marked.

Picture-lock handoff

Identify the precise source version used for every timeline clip. Include conform relationships, VFX status, colour and sound turnovers, captions, and the final approval record.

Each handoff should state which timeline is authoritative and what changed since the previous version.

Keep the handoff connected to the production

Before sending media to editorial, confirm that every selected shot has:

  • A stable project, scene, and Shot ID.
  • A take and version number.
  • A clear production status and approval scope.
  • A descriptive filename or reliable manifest entry.
  • A defined story purpose and coverage role.
  • Target duration and usable in/out range.
  • Adjacent-shot and continuity requirements.
  • Linked storyboard and approved references.
  • Source, proxy, upscale, and composite relationships.
  • Generation or creation provenance where useful.
  • Consolidated review notes.
  • Approval owner and date.
  • A documented replacement or supersession relationship.
  • Current dialogue, narration, and audio instructions.
  • Placement in the correct folder and latest manifest.

The complete handoff should also include:

  • Current script and scene order.
  • Storyboard or animatic.
  • Shot manifest.
  • Approved media and deliberate alternates.
  • Reference-only material stored separately.
  • Audio, graphics, and VFX packages.
  • Authoritative NLE project or exchange file.
  • Timeline version and change summary.
  • Delivery specifications.
  • Final approval and archive plan.

The editor’s job is to shape story, performance, emotion, rhythm, and meaning. A strong AI editorial handoff protects that work by removing avoidable ambiguity. It turns generated outputs into identifiable shots, preserves the reason behind each version, and gives the editor a reliable route from first assembly to final master.
